This scheme was to construct a significant extension to existing emergency department, alongside the refurbishment of some existing areas into new treatment space. Comprising a new two-story emergency department expansion of 6800sq ft, the building was connected to the existing structure of the hospital via a number of newly formed openings which required the breaking through of several new access points into live ED facilities and included some internal re-configuration of the existing building.
The foundations, drainage and services were formed on site, with the new building manufactured concurrently in advance using off-site volumetric construction techniques. Significant site works were required including moving existing temporary fire corridors, closing and re-routing a vehicular access route, alteration of an existing car park and provision of a steel sheet piled retaining wall. Once foundations were prepared, the volumetric off-site units were transported and lifted into place using night working patterns to alleviate traffic and parking disruption to the hospital, thus forming the shell of the new building. Once watertight the new openings into the existing hospital were formed and new and old floor spaces fitted out.
The works completed in the winter months and just in time for a significant escalation of COVID 19 patient numbers.
