Oastler Building, University of Huddersfield

Award-winning new home for the School of Law and Schools of Music, Humanities and Media at the University of Huddersfield

Working with: University of Huddersfield, GB Group, AHR Architects, TSP

Overview:

The project provides facilities for the University’s Law School and part of the School of Music, Humanities and Media.

Through a Competitive Dialogue procurement process, working closely with the University and design team we created an affordable solution with an award-winning design approach with a curved frontage to the building which faces out onto the main ring road with a 3.5m cantilever across six storeys. This dramatic design feature not only provides an innovative and dynamic shape but is a key environmental feature helping to self-shade the buildings glass façade, reducing solar gain and therefore energy costs for cooling.

The new scheme provides 7,500sqm of teaching space from a steel-framed structure of up to six-storeys positioned on a graded site in a prime location on the university’s town-centre campus. Anodised aluminium fins covering the building create an iconic look, while an EPC A-rating guarantees cheaper lifetime costs for the university.
