The Heights Free School

The Heights Free School

The refurbishment of an old boys borstal, into a bright, optimistic and modern place to learn.

The Heights Free school was a £2.3 million project as part of the North West Construction Hub framework (NWCH), with a construction period of 5 months. Originally a borstal, the school has struggled to shake off its image and demonstrate to the local community that it is moving with the times. This was not helped by the schools 1960’s institutional appearance. The school had converted to a Free School status, and secured a refurbishment grant from the Education Funding Authority (EFA).

The project involved a full refurbishment and alteration to the existing Fernhurst School. Internally the building layout has been significantly reconfigured to create a bright modern new entrance area, flexible learning spaces and an ambitious new IT suite. By focusing on making the internal spaces more efficient and flexible, the Design Team were able to significantly increase the schools provision from 60 to 120 students without increasing the footprint of the existing building. Externally the buildings two main elevations have been reclad to give the bright modern appearance the School and the EFA were aspiring towards, at minimal cost.
